Possible Wet Weekend in Southern Norway with Yellow Warning for Landslides and Floods

Aug 18 2023 12:25 – Updated 18 Aug. 2023 1:00 p.m

A low pressure on its way from the UK means that it could be a wet weekend in southern Norway. A yellow danger warning has been issued for landslides in parts of Viken and Inlandet.

– It is a low pressure that will come in over southern Norway on Saturday and hit Rogaland first, then Agder before it moves further north, says on-duty meteorologist Ingvild Villa at the Meteorological Institute to NTB.

She says the low pressure from the UK is bringing with it a cold front which will probably bring a lot of showers.

– There is a possibility of some local thunder in Rogaland and Agder, and there is eventually talk of more stormy weather. But it is uncertain where it will hit and how much rain will come, says Villa.

Follows the forecasts

Yr’s weather forecast shows at 12 o’clock on Friday that up to 80 millimeters of rain may fall in Oslo between 6 pm on Saturday and 12 pm on Sunday, but Villa says that it is far from certain that this much will fall.

– We haven’t sent out any danger warnings for rainfall yet, but we always follow the forecasts and make an ongoing assessment of it, she says.

In Stavanger, up to 20 millimeters of rain has been reported on Saturday afternoon and evening, while in Kristiansand up to 30 millimeters of rain has been reported from Saturday morning to Sunday morning.

Yellow warning for landslides and floods

Varsom.no has sent out a yellow warning for landslides and floods for western parts of Viken and Innlandet, which applies from Saturday evening to Sunday afternoon.

They indicate that the groundwater level and the degree of water saturation in the ground are already very high.

– A lot of rain is expected in places, which will increase the risk of landslides and floods in the warning area. The amount of precipitation and the location of the precipitation are uncertain. The avalanche danger is greatest where the showers hit. Follow weather radar. Steep slopes, as well as streams and rivers with a large flow of water are particularly vulnerable, writes Varsom.

Moving north

On Friday, Nordland, central Norway and the northern interior have the best weather in the country. They will have a good time on Saturday, before the low pressure leaves its mark here as well.

– The front will spread to Møre and Romsdal and Trøndelag. It will cloud a bit on Sunday and Monday in that part of the country. Then the high pressure that has produced good weather in the south in recent days will spread upwards towards the north, says Villa.
