Possible Washington Commanders Name Change After the 2023 Season

Reading time: 2 mins

There is a possibility that the Washington Commanders will undergo another name change in the future.

Magic Johnson, who is part of the Josh Harris-led ownership group that officially took over the Commanders on Thursday, isn’t ruling out a name change after the 2023 season.

“I think everything is on the table, especially after this year,” Johnson said on the Today Show Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post reported. “We’ll see where we stand with the name, but I can’t say that just yet.”

“We’re going to spend this year understanding what we have and then I’m sure that will come up. The Commanders, the team’s name, will appear at some point. But at the moment we have enough to keep us busy.”

A possible name change would be the fourth in a short time. The NFL franchise abandoned the controversial team name Redskins, which had been in use since 1933, after the 2019 season following pressure from sponsors. The team then competed under the Washington Football Team name for two seasons before adopting the Washington Commanders name ahead of the 2022 season.

The Washington franchise was sold to Harris and his co-owners for a record $6.05 billion, making it the most expensive acquisition by a US sports franchise. The sale ended Dan Snyder’s 24-year tenure, which was marred by numerous scandals of alleged workplace misconduct, sexual harassment and financial irregularities.
