After several minutes using rappelling equipment, the rescuers extracted the body from the waters of the Sís River. People who approached, claiming to be relatives, helped identify the deceased as Mr. Luis Julio Alvarez Línarez, 48 years old, originally from Cuyotenango Suchitepéquez. It is presumed that he suffered an assault, since he had left his residence on a Honda XR 190 motorcycle, which was not located.

A preliminary report indicates that the deceased had a gunshot wound to the chest. It will be the authorities, through the forensic opinion, who determine the exact causes of Alvarez Línarez’s death.

Due to speculation and in order not to hinder investigations, authorities did not provide further details about this case. However, this event increases the population’s concerns regarding the high incidence of violence and insecurity in Mazatenango and throughout the department of Suchitepéquez. This is especially relevant given the increase in thefts of motorcycles and vehicles, committed with violence and impunity, without effective responses from the security forces or the corresponding officials.
