At the same time, West African defense leaders have drawn up a plan for a possible military intervention to reverse last week’s coup in Niger, including how and when to deploy forces.
ECOWAS will not disclose to the coup participants when and where it will strike. This decision will be taken by the heads of state.
“All the elements that will be included in any possible intervention have been worked out here, including the necessary resources, methods and timing of the deployment of forces,” said ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security Abdel-Fatau Musa.
ECOWAS has already imposed sanctions on Niger and said it could authorize the use of force if the putschists do not return power to President-elect Mohamed Bazum by Sunday.
The day before, the 15-member organization sent a delegation to Niger to seek an “amicable solution,” but a meeting at the airport with representatives of the junta did not lead to a breakthrough, according to a source from the environment.
“We want diplomacy to work and a clear signal to them that we are giving them every opportunity to reverse what they have done,” Musa said.
Coup in Niger
On July 26, members of the Niger Presidential Guard effectively took President Mohammed Bazum hostage, blocking access to his residence. They later claimed to have overthrown the government of President Mohammed Bazum, closed borders and imposed a curfew.
Two days later, the head of the presidential guard, Abdurrahman Chiani, named himself the new leader of Niger. He was linked to the 2015 coup attempt against the former president.
On July 31, the countries of West Africa announced that they were planning a military intervention if Bazum was not fired and reinstated in a week. However, the rebels refused to comply with these conditions.
