What is probably a meteor has been observed over large parts of Eastern Norway until Sunday night.

– My wife and I heard loud bouldering and saw two powerful flashes of light. And it is definitely a big meteor that has come in over Eastern Norway. This is a big deal, says Morten Bilet in the Norwegian meteor network to VG.

The car is staying in Ås.

– It is a large meteor, and this is rare, he continues.

– It most likely came in from the asteroid belt, between Mars and Jupiter. It could be iron and it could be stones, we do not know yet, he says.

It is currently uncertain where the meteor, or meteor shower, will have landed.

– The extremely powerful light that was seen over Eastern Norway precisely, followed by bouldering and a smoke trail, was probably a huge meteor, writes astrophysicist Eirik Newth on Twitter.

– The whole sky lit up, and a kind of fireball was visible. Followed by a bang and later a roar, says one of VG’s reporters, Espen Moe Breivik, who is in Sande in Vestfold / Telemark.

A while after the flash of light, one could also hear a thunder-like sound over Oslo.

Police write on Twitter that they are being degraded by people.

– It’s probably a meteorite. We have received reports of this from callers, and our own crews have also reported this, says operations manager in the Oslo police district, Per Iversen to VG.

– We have received messages from Halden to Lake Mjøsa. It has been terribly busy here otherwise as well. Extremely much today otherwise as well, very many reports of noise and party noise as well, says operations manager in the Eastern Police District, Svein Walle, to VG.

– The police receive very many reports of powerful flashes of light. According to HRS, this comes from all over southern Norway. Possible meteorite but we do not know, the police write on Twitter.

Observations are also reported on Evje outside Kristiansand, which indicates that it has had a path from north to south, writes NTB.

Sara Holby was sitting in her apartment in Lørenskog when she and friends at 01.30 saw a green light across the sky.

– We ran out to see. Then there was a thunderclap from the sky followed by a kind of crackle on the ground, she says.

VG has been in contact with several who have seen what is supposed to be a meteorite – both in Oslo, Viken and Innlandet county. VG has also received tips from large parts of the country – from the Trondheim area, Oslo and Stavanger about people who have observed the meteor.
