New York authorities tighten security in front of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office, where former US President Donald Trump could appear.
This is the clearest indication that investigators are close to making the unprecedented decision to indict a former president on criminal charges; as in New York State, prospective defendants are required by law to be notified and invited to appear before a jury to evaluate the charges.
The mayor of New York, Eric Adams, assures that they are working to maintain calm in the city: “The prosecutor is going to make that determination and we are doing what we always do. You know, we are monitoring the comments on social media and the NYPD is doing their normal role of making sure there are no inappropriate actions in the city.”
Through his social networks, the former president said over the weekend that he would be arrested this Tuesday, in a statement in which he called on his followers to protest to recover the nation. A situation reminiscent of the calls prior to the insurrection of January 6, 2021 that led to an assault on the Capitol.
The investigation into this case seeks to find out if Trump really gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, to pay porn star Stormy Daniels $130,000 for her silence about an alleged affair before the 2016 elections.
The former president has vowed to continue his campaign to become the Republican nominee in the 2024 presidential election, even if he is impeached.
A historic fact, since it would be the first time that a former president of the United States and an important presidential candidate has been criminally accused.
