“Possible Free Agent Wide Receiver Options for the Dallas Cowboys in 2023”

At the start of the offseason, one of the Cowboys’ priorities for the coming season was to bolster their receiving corps. In the trade for Brandin Cooks at the beginning of free agency, the cowboy team added a rookie with its 7th round pick in the 2023 Draft. And, to them, four undrafted receivers are added that are more likely to be elements of depth for training camp practices.

However, the Cowboys are not ruling out the possibility of adding a free agent to their receiving corps. This was revealed by Will McClay, Dallas’ vice president of player personnel, during a recent interview.

“If there’s an opportunity to do something in free agency, we’ll take a look at it.”McClay said. “We feel good about the group (of players) because they have been here, in the system (…) If we have a problem, we will go out and find someone to continue trying to improve.”

Let’s review the situation. On paper, Dallas’ receiving trio would be CeeDee Lamb, Michael Gallup and Brandin Cooks. Behind them, the battle for backup spots would be between Simi Fehoko, Jalen Tolbert, Dennis Houston and rookie Jalen Brooks. Even KaVontae Turpin could look to have more of an offensive presence despite having a fixed role on special teams.

This, of course, also doesn’t rule out the possibility of a talented receiver emerging from this year’s undrafted rookie pool. Group, it is worth noting, that make up Jalen Moreno-Cropper (Fresno State), David Durden (West Florida), José Barbon (Temple) and John Stevens Jr. (Louisiana). In fact, let’s remember that Dennis Houston made Dallas’ 53-man roster in 2022 as an undrafted rookie.

However, the spotlights could point more to two players in particular. This is how Will McClay’s statements regarding the Dallas receiving corps let him see.

“We always seek to improve”McClay said. “We feel like we have players on the roster who are improving. We’ve talked about the maturing process of players like Simi (Fehoko) and (Jalen) Tolbert. We have guys that have been here a year, and we’re waiting for them to step up.”

What receiver could Dallas add in free agency?

As we can see, the Dallas receiving corps is loaded with young talent. However, many of them have to prove themselves during training camp. And more so this year, since the Cowboys don’t want to have a limited offense in key games like they did last season.

Because of this, the cowboy team could add a free agent if necessary. And if that were to happen right now, there are some eye-catching options. The first of these would be TY Hilton, who already played with Dallas in 2022. However, there are those who say that Hilton could be more of a reinforcement at the end of the season, this because he might not be available until then due to extra-sports commitments.

Outside of Hilton, other free agency options include Jarvis Landry, Cole Beasley, Kenny Golladay, N’Keal Harry, Julio Jones and Sammy Watkins, to name a few. However, this list may shrink as the start of NFL training camps approaches.

It is worth mentioning that the receiver position is not the only one that the Cowboys do not rule out reinforcing through free agency. As is logical, the team will be moving pieces as the training camp unfolds. Therefore, no movement is ruled out so far. That yes: knowing the leadership, it is not necessary to wait for a renowned hiring either. This, of course, unless Dallas finds a market opportunity they don’t want to pass up.
