If it is up to Minister Dekker, children can in the future be given the surname of both parents. The outgoing Minister for Legal Protection has submitted a bill for this to the House of Representatives. Previously, the Room already argued for the possibility.
According to Dekker, this is how the child’s bond with both parents can be expressed. The double surname may consist of a maximum of two names and is written without a hyphen, for example Jansen De Boer.
Also for the following children
If the House of Representatives and the Senate agree to the plan, parents can give their first child born after the amendment of the law two surnames. This choice also applies to any subsequent children in the family. And for adopted children it will be possible to choose a combination of their surname at birth and the names of the adoptive parents.
A double surname is not required. The Ministry of Justice has conducted a poll and it appears that 32 percent of those polled are in favor of a choice.
