A spokesman for the US State Department, Monday in Washington, considered that the termination of The coup in Niger By diplomatic means is still possible.
“It is still possible. We think the military council should withdraw and allow President (Mohamed) Bazoum to regain his position,” spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters.
In turn, the Prime Minister of Niger, Hamoudou Mahamadou, announced on Monday that the military putschists had asked the delegation of the Economic Community of West African States “ECOWAS” to “return” to Niamey, noting that the members of the delegation “will be in Niamey, most likely today (Monday) or tomorrow.”
And Matthew Miller considered that the use of force constitutes the “last” solution for West African countries, noting that the United States is “focusing on finding a diplomatic solution.”
He criticized the fact that Mali and Burkina Faso sent a joint official delegation to Niamey, two countries that are also ruled by military personnel.
“If we had thought they were sending envoys to try to restore democratic powers and constitutional order, we would have seen that as helpful, but I highly doubt that would be the case,” Miller told reporters.
For its part, the European Union confirmed Monday that it still believes there is room for mediation in Niger ahead of an emergency summit of regional leaders later this week, following the military junta’s seizure of power last month.
An EU spokesperson said by email: “The EU continues to believe there is room for mediation until Thursday 10th August when it will take place.” Economic Community of West African States ECOWAS is another extraordinary summit on the situation in Niger.
