Possible Coronavirus Outbreak Investigated in New York After Florida Traveler Tested Positive | Univision 41 New York WXTV

NEW YORK. –– The governor Andrew Cuomo announced Saturday that the state will investigate a possible outbreak of covid-19 in New YorkIt is believed to have been caused by a student who attended a graduation ceremony in Westchester County after returning from Florida.

According to reports, four people who were in contact with the young man have tested positive for the coronavirus. The ceremony was reportedly held on June 20 in the town of Chappaqua, which is north of New York City.

It was a “drive-in” ceremony in which attendees remained in their cars.

“New Yorkers have controlled the spread of this unprecedented virus by being smart and disciplined, and our progress to date is illustrated by the current low number of new cases and hospitalizations,” said Governor Andrew Cuomo.

“But as we are seeing in other states that reopened quickly, the pandemic is far from over and we need to (be) on the alert. We are prepared to do the aggressive testing and contact tracking necessary to slow down and ultimately control any potential group of new cases like Westchester County. “

Those who were infected went into isolation and other aides have been instructed to remain in quarantine until July 5.

It is not yet clear if the student was infected in Florida or how many people at the ceremony were potentially exposed to the virus.

Florida has become one of the new states with high rates of contagion, along with Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Utah, and Texas. People traveling to New York from these states have been ordered to remain in quarantine for 14 days, or else they could face heavy fines.

The Florida Department of Health reported nearly 10,000 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, bringing its total to more than 132,500. Deaths in the state are around 3,400.

Meanwhile, the number of New Yorkers who tested positive for the coronavirus dropped from below 1 percent to 0.96 percent, the Cuomo office said Saturday.
