Possible Causes Being Investigated for Spike in Brain Abscesses in Children in Nevada: CDC

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the US is investigating possible causes for a sudden spike in brain abscesses in children in Nevada.

What are brain abscesses?

• Pus-filled pockets of infection spreading to the brain.

• It may cause epileptic seizures, visual disturbances, or impaired vision, speech, or balance.

• Its early symptoms are headache and fever that appear and disappear.

• Cysts often require surgery to treat them.

• Children may take a few weeks or even months in the hospital to recover after surgery.

A rise in injuries

Taryn Bragg, a pediatric neurosurgeon at Intermountain Elementary Children’s Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada, reported an unexpected number of cases south of the state.

“We started noticing the infections in March 2022,” Bragg told Fox News on Sunday. “The vast majority of children suffer from sinus infections that quickly developed into brain abscesses.”

The specialist doctor indicated that these cases have increased 3 times in children in the last year.

She said that the majority of children also showed the presence of bacteria of the type “Streptococcus intermedias”, which are usually found in the oral cavity and respiratory tract.

Bragg explained: “It often does not lead to infection, but it is possible, as these bacteria are the most common organisms that lead to abscesses in the brain.”

Corona relationship

On the other hand, experts have ruled out that the Corona precautionary measures in 2021, and vaccines for the disease, have weakened the immunity of children, as there is no evidence that the two things are linked together, according to “Fox News”.

The CDC discussed for the first time the increase in pediatric brain cysts in its weekly report on morbidity and mortality for September 2022.

This came after 3 children in California were hospitalized with this condition in May 2022, when the center began investigating.
