ALBANY, New York. – New York State health authorities are investigating a possible case of monkeypox after a patient tested positive for the family of viruses linked to this rare disease, state officials reported.
The patient, whose name has not been released, is isolated and receiving medical attention under the assumption of a positive case in which they receive confirmation from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC for its acronym in English).
New York City public health officials previously said they were investigating two possible cases of monkeypoxa virus that is rarely reported outside of Africa and can cause flu-like symptoms.
One of the cases was ruled out after several tests, the Health Department said.
WHO records 80 cases of monkeypox worldwide
“The other tested positive for orthopoxvirus and developed an illness that can be considered monkeypox,” the department stated.
City epidemiologists have begun tracking down people who may have had contact with the person.

The virus originates in primates and other wild animals, and causes fever, body aches, chills, and fatigue in most patients. People with severe cases can develop rashes and lesions on the face, hands, and other parts of the body.
