Possible braking failure on one million cars

“Rust on the brake booster can, in the worst case, cause the connection between the brake pedal and the brake system to break. In that case, the car may lose its brakes “, the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) states in a report.

A total of 993,407 Mercedes cars worldwide are being recalled. These are models in the ML class, GL class and R class that were produced between 2004 and 2015, according to car-recalls.eu.

The Norwegian Mercedes-Benz importer Bertel O Steen does not state how many cars are affected by the action.

Home visits to customers

Audun Hermansen, who is communications director at the Norwegian importer, confirms the recall and that a large apparatus has been put in place to check and repair these cars.

– It has been a very good and fast job of our service apparatus in this case. With extra work shifts in the workshops and even visits to customers’ homes, the inspection and error correction has in practice already been carried out for the affected cars in Norway, says Hermansen.

He does not want to go into detail about how many cars have been affected by the action. According to the Road Traffic Information Council, around 10,000 of the affected models have been sold in Norway in the period in question. Whether everyone is affected, we do not know.

Do not use the car

In a message to the news agency AFP, a spokesman for Mercedes says that “until a check of the car has been carried out at the workshop, we ask our customers not to drive their cars”.

– There are of course a number of older cars, some used imported and so on, where it requires a little extra to get in touch with the current owner, Hermansen says to DinSide.

If you suspect that you may have a car that has not been caught by the action of the Norwegian importer, the EU website car-recalls.eu encourages you to contact your nearest dealer quickly.

Also in January

This is the second time this year that Mercedes has launched a “million recall”.

In January, the factory announced that 850,000 cars will have to return to the workshop due to a possible leak on a vacuum-controlled cooling pump. This could lead to an electrochemical reaction and thus the risk of fire and reduced braking force.

Then there was talk of the Vito and V-Class, which in most cases are sold as vans in Norway.
