Scientists from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) in Brazil have discovered the possibility of slowing the growth of breast cancer by changing the profile of a type of defense cells. As reported by Fiocruz, scientists have shown that it is possible to transform M1 cells of macrophages, which are more associated with the expansion of tumors, into M2 cells, which are more associated with cancer containment.
To achieve this change, the researchers used iron oxide nanoparticles produced in the laboratory in collaboration with the Federal University of Pernambuco. Tests carried out on human cells in two and three dimensions, as well as laboratory experiments with mice, showed positive results.
However, the Fiocruz scientists warn that this research is only the starting point for the evaluation of a possible therapy with this approach. Other issues still need to be evaluated, such as physiological effects, mechanisms of action, side effects, drug absorption time, and biodistribution in the body, among other aspects.
Despite these limitations, the research represents a proof of concept that could open up new possibilities for the treatment of breast cancer. The proposal is that, in contact with the compound, the M1 macrophages transform into M2, reinforcing the control of cancer expansion. This approach offers the possibility of a local treatment, directly in the tumor, which would allow greater control compared to systemic interventions.
