Positive News: Decline in HIV Diagnoses and Access to Prevention Pill

01 Oct 2023 at 17:53

Because negative news often dominates NU.nl, positive news is sometimes obscured. That is why we list cheerful messages every week. This time including the successful HIV prevention pill. Furthermore, residents of Tynaarlo with a tight budget can go to the fair for free.

The number of HIV diagnoses in Amsterdam has fallen significantly

The number of new people with a positive HIV test in Amsterdam has fallen by at least 79 percent since 2010. The decrease is partly due to the prevention pill PrEP. “We were really waiting for this.”

In 2010, three hundred people in Amsterdam heard that they were infected with HIV. In 2022 this was still 62 people.

The figures are “great news”, says a spokesperson for Soa Aids Nederland. “We were really waiting for that sharp decline. That is mainly the result of the use of the HIV prevention pill PrEP.”

The GGD Amsterdam also partly attributes the decline to PrEP. People can take that pill to prevent themselves from becoming infected. There is increasing enthusiasm for this.

“We are also faster in finding acute infections and treating them immediately,” the GGD says. Amsterdam aims to register no new HIV infections by 2026. To achieve that goal, they focus on combating stigmas surrounding HIV and the vulnerable position of people with the virus.

HIV prevention pill will soon be available to more people

Even more positive news about the HIV prevention pill mentioned above. From August next year, more people will be able to use the HIV prevention pill PrEP. According to outgoing Health Minister Ernst Kuipers, the current trial with PrEP shows that the drug “makes an important contribution to combating HIV”.

The pill is currently only available to men who have sex with men and transgender people who are at a higher risk of contracting HIV. Because this is a trial, only a limited number of people can use PrEP. This has resulted in long waiting lists. Three thousand people are currently waiting to participate in the program.

Because the HIV prevention pill is successful, Minister Kuijpers will expand the test. From August 2024, anyone who has an increased risk of contracting HIV can make use of the scheme. This makes the pill also available to people who do not belong to the risk group themselves, but who do have sex with people from that group.

All’s well that ends well for osprey from the Biesbosch after an emotional rollercoaster

The turbulent year of osprey 7TG from the Biesbosch has a happy ending. While the breeding season started disastrously – his partner did not return from the south after years together – he ends the season with a new love.

The osprey became known to the general public earlier this year when Staatsbosbeheer took down a webcam aimed at it due to a lack of action.

Tight purse? Still going to the fair

Residents of Tynaarlo in Drenthe with a limited budget can go to the Zuidlaardermarkt fair for free. The municipality believes it is important that they also continue to go out to keep in touch with others.

“For many residents of our municipality, the fair is the highlight of the Zuidlaardermarkt. With this promotion we ensure that all parents and children can enjoy it,” reports councilor Jelbrich Peters on the municipality’s website.

About twelve hundred households that previously received the energy allowance from the municipality will receive a letter at home with the offer. Everyone who qualifies will receive ten coins to spend on, for example, the bumper cars or the oliebollen stall.

There were many more women involved in the resistance newspaper Fidelity than previously thought. This is evident from oresearch from the newspaper. The women who helped create the newspaper during World War II remained unknown for a long time. Until now.
