Positive Effect of Cheap Energy and Fuel on Food Prices in Czech Republic

Cheap energy and fuel also have a positive effect on food prices. And they are also mentioned by experts, according to whom another price shock is not yet in sight. However, this year’s harvest of Czech growers will depend on the selected types of fruit and vegetables.

It was undoubtedly good news for Czech households that the VAT on food was reduced by three percent from this January. And despite the voices of some skeptics, according to economist Štěpán Křeček, it really had a positive effect on the price tags in stores.

“The discount was noticeable in all the supermarkets I visited since the beginning of the year. Some retail chains even used it in their marketing. You can see how much the goods have become cheaper on the price tags,” Křeček recalls.

”And the sellers were even so consistent in their overvaluation that we already see price tags calculated for individual pennies in stores, whereas before it was common to see Baťa’s 90 pennies behind the decimal point,” explains the economist. Official confirmation that the price reduction was widespread will come only with inflation data from the Czech Statistical Office for the month of January.

However, we shouldn’t encounter any unpleasant surprises in stores for the rest of the year either. The outlook is entirely positive. “For example, the prices of agricultural products have been falling for seven months in a row, and cheap fuel has also had an effect,” says Křeček. Their prices are already lower in the Czech Republic than in Poland and can be included, for example, in the prices of food transport.

“How much we will pay for some types of fruit and vegetables this year will also depend on the harvest of Czech growers. However, there is no reason for dairy and meat products to become more expensive. I expect food inflation to be around zero,” the president told TN.cz Trade and Tourism Association Tomáš Prouza.

The government can reduce food prices, economists say. There is no way, the minister defends himself (5/12/2023):
