Positive corona test by Kevin Mbabu

The Bundesliga has its first Corona case of the new season. Wolfsburg’s Kevin Mbabu was tested positive for the virus, as the Bundesliga team announced on Saturday shortly before the start of training. The test carried out on Wednesday showed the Swiss to be positive. The 25-year-old is in domestic quarantine until further notice.

“Kevin is currently symptom-free. We are now waiting for the further course and are in close and very good contact with the Wolfsburg health department, as in the past few months,” said VfL sports director Marcel Schäfer. All other results of the two necessary test series before the start of the training, which were carried out on Wednesday and Friday, were negative.

Mbabu will probably miss Wolfsburg in the Europa League

“In order to minimize the risk of possible infection in a case like this, we have set the test times so that the players and staff team do not meet before the first joint training session,” said Schäfer. Before the start of the preparation, all players and members of the coaching staff at the professional clubs must have two negative corona tests.

Since the positive test at Mbabu happened at the beginning of the preparation, the effects are still relatively minor. The right-back will most likely miss the Europa League round of 16 second leg on August 5 against Shakhtar Donetsk in Kiev. After that it should be available to VfL again.

On the other hand, a positive result during the past season could have had more serious consequences. The Dynamo Dresden team had to quarantine for two weeks because of positive cases in the team. There were also positive results at 1. FC Köln, but the local health authority decided not to isolate the entire team. Otherwise, German professional football managed to end the season without any major problems with the exclusion of spectators thanks to a strict hygiene concept.
