Now that Apple has fully made the transition to Apple Silicon, they have a small puzzle: how to position their various devices, not only in ‘features’, but also in computing power.
You see this dilemma with Mac Pro vs. MacStudio. Since they have exactly the same processor/CPU, there’s very little difference between the two (and therefore very little reason to go with the Mac Pro).
What I can imagine is that Apple waits until the M3 is available, and then releases this iMac with a (then) “old” M2. (Maybe with M2 Pro as an upgrade).
That way they can better position their “consumer” and “pro” lines, with “old” CPUs coming in the cheaper models.
It is therefore possible that the distinction between the CPUs will decrease over time. So that there is no longer an M3 and M3 Pro (probably still Max/Ultra), but that the line-up becomes clearer by simply having “old/new generation” instead of “regular/pro”. This is because, for example, it is now quite complicated to know: which is better: the M2 or the M1 Pro?
It’s just a theory 🙂
