As POSCO Group, the 5th largest business group, suddenly implemented the ‘every other four-day week system’, there are predictions that major domestic companies will also actively consider introducing the four-day week system.

According to the business world on the 20th, POSCO will introduce a ‘selective working hour system of 4 days a week every other week’ for about 10,000 full-time employees across the company starting from the 22nd.

If you work an average of 40 hours a week for two weeks, you can work 5 days a week in the first week and 4 days a week in the second week. In addition to the existing selective working hour system, the newly established biweekly four-day weekly system eliminates the mandatory four-hour workday only on alternate Fridays. Accordingly, employees can rest on Fridays every other week if they work an average of 40 hours a week for two weeks. In this case, you can engage in various activities for your personal life, such as going on a trip every two weeks from Thursday evening after work to Sunday.

As POSCO, the largest business company in the POSCO Group, has introduced the four-day workweek, other affiliates within the group are also starting to introduce the four-day workweek. POSCO Holdings, the holding company of POSCO Group, also decided to implement a four-day workweek starting from the 22nd. POSCO Future M has also decided to implement a four-day workweek and is coordinating the timing. POSCO International is also considering it. POSCO Humans and POSCO TJ Park Foundation also decided to introduce a four-day workweek.

While companies in Europe, the United States, and Japan are introducing a four-day workweek, POSCO Group in Korea is also implementing a four-day workweek every other week, and companies are increasingly attempting to shorten working hours in the era of ‘work-life balance’. It is becoming. This is because it is believed that improving the quality of life of members will increase productivity and enhance their sense of belonging to the company.

Major conglomerates have also introduced a partial four-day work week. After consultation between labor and management, Samsung Electronics established a mid-month holiday system in June last year that allows employees to take a break on Friday once a month if they meet the required monthly working hours. Starting with SK Telecom in 2019, SK Group sequentially introduced a four-day workweek system with a break on Fridays once or twice a month at major affiliates such as SK Corporation, SK Hynix, and SK Square. LG Group has not yet introduced a four-day workweek, but operates a flexible work system that allows employees to freely choose their work hours at the discretion of department heads. Working hours are 40 hours per week at the discretion of the department head, and work days may be adjusted upon prior agreement.

However, there are some opinions that it is realistically difficult to introduce a four-day workweek in some manufacturing industries. A manufacturing official said, “POSCO’s decision to implement a four-day workweek every other week is an unusual case, and it is not realistically easy for a domestic manufacturing company to introduce a four-day workweek due to various circumstances.”
