Portuguese media unpack: ‘Former arbitrator received money from Benfica’

Heavy weather threatens Benfica, which will soon compete with Ajax in the eighth finals of the Champions League. According to Portuguese media, the top club from Lisbon has paid almost two million euros to former referee Bruno Paixão.

During a financial investigation, it came to light that the arbitrator, who retired in 2018, was paid by a small IT consultancy for work that he would not have performed at all. At the same time, Benfica was found to have transferred 1.9 million euros to the IT company.

Misunderstanding

Paixão has confirmed that he has received money, but added that he was working for the company in question during that period. He denies having any ties to Benfica and calls the matter a misunderstanding.
