Cabrita resigned almost five months after the incident. He was repeatedly called upon to resign, but the minister refused to do so. Cabrita denied any responsibility and said that he “was just a passenger”, which caused outrage in society.
However, this position of the minister became even more unacceptable after the official statement of the prosecutor’s office – his driver was accused of negligent murder. He exceeded the speed limit and ran into a 43-year-old road repairman.
On December 3, Cabrita said he was stepping down because the opposition “politically exploits” the road accident ahead of the parliamentary elections in 2022, and he himself “more than anyone else regrets this tragic loss.”
The Portuguese Prime Minister accepted the resignation of the Minister of the Interior on the same day and reported this to the President. On December 4, Francisca Van Dunen was appointed Minister of the Interior of Portugal.
Recall that the Portuguese parliament supported amendments to labor legislation, which provide for employer fine for contacting employees outside of working hours.
