Portuguese Football Federation Referee Committee President Jose Fontelas Gomes said that they were ready to assign duties to Turkish referees after the attack on Halil Umut Meler and that they sent an invitation letter to TFF regarding the issue.
In the statement published before TFF’s decision to start the leagues on December 19, Jose Fontelas Gomes used the following statements:
Considering that league matches in Turkey are suspended until further notice, we are ready to assign international Turkish referees to referee in our league in order to support Turkish referees and guarantee that their rhythm is maintained. We must all work together to strengthen and protect officiating, promoting a safe and fair environment for everyone. We should all be concerned when the integrity and safety of referees, who play a vital role in fair competition, are compromised in this way.
