Portuguese Football Businessman César Boaventura Convicted for Corruption in Favor of Benfica: FC Porto Reacts

“The conviction in the first instance of César Boaventura for three crimes of corruption in sport committed in favor of Benfica is a stain on the history of Portuguese football”, highlighted the club in a statement.

The conviction of businessman César Boaventura for three crimes of active corruption in sport, with a suspended sentence of three years and four months, merited an institutional reaction from FC Porto.

Football businessman César Boaventura was sentenced this Wednesday by the Court of Matosinhos, to a cumulative prison sentence of three years and four months, with execution suspended, for three crimes of active corruption in sport.

César Boaventura was also sentenced to pay 30 thousand euros in favor of a social solidarity or sports promotion institution, and prevented from having professional activity as a player agent, directly or indirectly, for two years.

“The conviction in the first instance of César Boaventura for three crimes of corruption in sport committed in favor of Benfica is a stain on the history of Portuguese football”, highlighted the club in a statement.

For FC Porto, “at issue are acts that seriously harm the sporting truth of the competitions and that contribute to fueling suspicions about what determined the classification of the championship at the time in which they were committed”.

In a statement, the “dragons” consider “it is not likely that such actions resulted exclusively from the individual will of the convicted person, it is required that the sports justice system evaluates them properly, determines responsibilities and acts accordingly”.

The court proved the solicitation of former Rio Ave players Cássio Marcelo and Lionn, but cleared César Boaventura of the crime of corruption in the attempted form of former Marítimo player Romain Salin.

César Boaventura was not present at the reading of the ruling, this afternoon, at the Matosinhos court, due to illness, but at the end of the session his lawyer confirmed that he will appeal the sentence to a higher court.
