Despite the bad day at the Vuelta, Portuguese cyclist receives admiration from his peers

João Almeida had a day to forget yesterday at the Vuelta, losing more than 6 minutes to Jonas Vingegaard on the climb to Tourmalet and being more than eight behind the red jersey, Sepp Kuss, in the general classification. The Portuguese cyclist himself made a point of admitting this after the 13th stage, stating that he is now waiting for “better days”.
However, despite the less positive performance, the UAE Emirates runner received several compliments from great figures (current and former) of the sport, such as Alberto Contador or Tadej Pogacar. “Gladiator”, said the former Spanish runner in response to Almeida’s Instagram post. The Slovenian, a colleague on the Emirates team, made a point of agreeing with Contador: “That’s right. João is the greatest fighter there is.”
