The arrival of a new coach is always surrounded by a lot of expectation. It is no different in Botafogo, who introduced Portuguese Artur Jorge to the fans last Saturday. The former Braga player has the mission of getting the SAF project back on track.
Artur Jorge says that it was easy to accept Botafogo’s proposal: “I wanted to be part of this project”
Jorge arrives in Brazil after seven years of working for the Portuguese team with great success. With him, he reached the Champions League and was in fourth place in the Liga Portugal before accepting the challenge at Glorioso.
The coach is known for his offensive football and this is exactly what he promises to do upon arrival at Alvinegro.
– My objective at this moment is to make this Botafogo a dominant team, that has courage, filled with values that we believe they can identify and have their own identity. So that we can adjust and determine what our game idea is. So that we can, in a very clear way, make the players adapt and believe in what is the idea of the entire coaching staff – he stated in the presentation.
It wouldn’t be very coherent if I said that my idea is to maintain what is being done here.
—Artur Jorge
The 52-year-old professional has built a strong relationship with Braga, both on the field and off it. He spent 12 years as a defender, before retiring at Penafiel and returning to lead the team.
In Portugal, Artur built the identity of a coach who prioritizes offensive play, something desired by John Textor during the search for a new name. According to Luís Magalhães, Braga’s reporter for the newspaper A Bola, the coach is missing the defensive consistency needed to win titles.
Artur Jorge leads his first activity as Botafogo’s new coach
– Artur Jorge’s teams like to have the ball, controlling the match with possession of it. When facing stronger teams, he was never truly able to strategically stop his opponents’ superiority. He works with the method of intensity and proximity to the players. He also invests heavily in young people with potential, leaving them free to show their qualities.
The 52-year-old Portuguese will have the mission of adapting the ideas they have about football to a squad that was not created by him. This is because he arrives with the transfer window closed, except for those who competed at state level who can be hired until the 19th.
Within his options, Artur Jorge prioritizes some player characteristics to build his teams.
– With the squad he had at his disposal [no Braga], in attacking terms, he placed fast wingers who made movements inside, looking for the full-backs to offer depth. Fighting attackers who are the first to pressure in the defensive moment. An area-to-area midfielder and another more cerebral midfielder who is also the one who builds the first offensive moment – concluded Magalhães.

The fittings won’t take long, because Botafogo starts on Thursday a marathon of matches between the end and mid-week that should only end in June.
With Conmebol Libertadores, Brasileirão and Copa do Brasil, the Portuguese will have to change the tire while the car is running. The first challenge is for the continental tournament. They face LDU on Thursday, at 7pm, at the Casablanca Stadium, in Quito, Ecuador.
