Portuguese Blood Institute asks for donations because reserves are below recommended

“Most Portuguese have blood groups A and O, so, naturally, these are the ones that are most lacking”, affirms in a statement the president of IPST, Maria Antónia Escoval.

The note also states that “at this time, in addition to the usual decrease in the number of donations, resulting from low temperatures and cases of flu”, the need for blood has increased, especially in these two groups.

The blood reserves of groups A and O of the IPST are “below recommended” and fail to “meet the needs”, the statement continues.

The Portuguese Institute of Blood and Transplantation therefore calls for the participation of “all who meet the criteria for blood donation”.

To be a blood donor, you must be between 18 and 65 years old, and the limit for the first donation is 60 years old, have a weight equal to or greater than 50 kilograms and have healthy lifestyle habits.

Donations can be made in the Blood and Transplantation Centers of Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra, hospital units with a collection service and in the mobile collection sessions that take place daily in various locations in the country.
