Portugal with the highest number of cases since 8 May and 86% of new infections in Lisbon | Coronavirus

This Sunday Portugal recorded three more deaths by covid-19, an increase of 0.2%, adding up to a total of 1564 fatalities in the country since the outbreak began. And there are 457 more people infected in the last 24 hours, which corresponds to a growth rate of 1.1% and which brings the total number of confirmed cases to 41,646. This was the biggest daily increase in cases since May 8, day when 553 more cases were registered of infection by new coronavirus in Portugal.

The situation report released this Sunday by the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) reports 391 new cases in the region of Lisbon and the Tagus Valley – about 86% of infections detected in the last 24 hours.


The total number of people recovered rose to 27,066, with 202 more since Saturday. Excluding these cases and deaths, there are 13,016 active cases in Portugal.

458 people are hospitalized (16 more than the previous day), 75 of whom are in intensive care (five more than on Saturday).


Two of the three deaths recorded in the last 24 hours were identified in the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo region (LVT) and one in the Alentejo. The fatal victims are a man between 70 and 79 years old and two women over 80 years old. The global lethality rate of the disease is now 3.8% and rises to 13.7% over the age of 70, the age group that concentrates around 86% of registered deaths.


Lisbon and Tagus Valley now total 18,752 cases and 465 deaths since the outbreak began.

The North region, the second with the highest number of accumulated cases, accounts for 17,476 cases and 816 deaths, with 31 infections detected in the last 24 hours.

This Sunday’s bulletin also indicates that four new infections have been identified in the Alentejo, bringing the total to 471 cases. In the last two weeks, the region recorded 189 more cases which corresponds to 40% of the total number of infected people. As of June 14, 282 cases had been detected in Alentejo.


This Sunday it became known that “all” clients of Parque de Campismo da Galé, in Grândola, had a negative result in screening tests for covid-19, but there are nine people living in this municipality in Alentejo infected. Ismael Selemane, from the local Health authority, told the Portuguese agency that, of these nine, “three are employees” of the park and “six are young people from the municipality”.

“We did the screening on Friday” and the conclusion is that “there is no positive result between users and customers of the park”, so, whoever wants, can leave the facilities.

Regarding the cases linked to the Reguengos de Monsaraz home in Évora, the City Council revealed this Sunday that there are now 11 patients admitted to the Évora hospital, one of them in intensive care. This outbreak has already resulted in three deaths, the last of which was an 82-year-old woman who died this Saturday. The Alentejo region has recorded five deaths since the outbreak began.

A further 14 cases were detected in the Centro region and 17 in the Algarve. The archipelagos have no record of new infections, with the Azores registering 149 cases and 15 deaths from covid-19 and Madeira with 92 cases and no deaths.

Lisbon is the municipality with the most cases identified since the outbreak began, with 3423 infections. In the last 24 hours, the municipality of the capital registered another 76 cases. It follows Sintra, with 2564 cases, 65 more than on Saturday.
