On Friday at 20:45 in Porto, Portugal, the Slovak football representatives will play against the home national team led by the star Cristiano Ronaldo in the J-group qualification for next year’s European Championship in Germany.
It will be a duel between two teams that are currently occupying two promotion positions. So far, the Portuguese have a 100 percent record in terms of points and defense. From six meetings, they have 18 points and a score of 24:0. The Slovaks collected 13 points and have a three-point lead over the third-placed Luxembourgers.
The representative A-teams of Portugal and Slovakia met five times in the past. The Portuguese won as many as four duels, one resulted in a draw. So far, the only Slovakian scorer in previous matches is Miroslav Karhan, who in 2005 scored from a penalty kick in a 1:1 draw at Bratislava’s Tehelno pol as part of qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
Friday’s match at the sold-out home stadium of FC Porto, Estadio do Dragao (capacity 50,033 seats), will be broadcast live by TV station Sport 1, Tasos Sidiropoulos will act as the main referee. The 44-year-old Greek “whistled” the European Conference League match between Olimpija Ljubljana and ŠK Slovan Bratislava (0:1) last Thursday. Polychronis Kostaras and Lazaros Dimitriadis will assist him on the lines.
