Portugal: Pepe announces retirement – Ronaldo reacts emotionally | Football

A Portuguese icon says goodbye to football. Pepe (41) has announced on his social media accounts that he is ending his career.

He shared a video with the caption “Obrigado” (Thank you), which showed the numerous trophies the Portuguese won during his career.

The robust central defender won the Champions League three times with Real Madrid and the European Championship in 2016. Pepe had his most successful time with the Royal Club, for whom he played for a total of ten years.

Pepe was most recently under contract with FC Porto, but his contract was not renewed. The former Portuguese international was known for his tough, passionate and uncompromising style of play.

Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo (39) reacted to the end of his former teammate’s career with an emotional message. On Instagram, Ronaldo wrote: “There are not enough words to express how much you mean to me.”

And he continued: “We have won everything together that can be won. But the greatest thing is the friendship and respect that I feel for you. You are unique, my brother. Thank you for so much.”

The two Portuguese players met in 2002 when Pepe did a trial training session at Sporting Lisbon – Ronaldo was only 17 at the time.

Since then, Pepe and Ronaldo have made history together, winning the 2016 European Championship and three Champions League titles together.
