Portugal became the fifth team after Germany, France, Italy and Spain to reach the quarter-finals of the Nations League. Denmark and Croatia still have to be patient.
The Portuguese secured progress and victory in Group 1 with a 5-1 win in front of their home crowd against Poland. All the goals came in the second half. Among others, superstar Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice and Bruno Fernandes scored with a stunning long-range shot.
Due to Poland’s defeat, a point against Scotland in the other group game would have been enough for Croatia to qualify for the quarter-finals. For a long time it looked as if Luka Modric and his teammates would manage this – despite being far outnumbered after a red-yellow card against Petar Sucic. Just four minutes from time Iain McGinn scored for the home side at Hampden Park in Glasgow. So everything is still open behind Portugal in the fight for the second quarter ticket.
Spain remained unbeaten for the 15th time in a row. The reigning European champion and Nations League winner only trembled for a moment when the host appeared in Copenhagen. Captain Mikel Oyarzabal after a quarter of an hour and Ayoze Perez after just under an hour gave the Iberians a 2-0 lead. The Danes’ goal from Gustav Isaksen came too late. In the Swiss group on the last day there is a direct duel between Denmark and Serbia for second place.
