Luis Montenegro’s centre-right coalition managed to beat the Socialist Party by less than 1% in Sunday’s elections in Portugal.
At 99.01% of the count, the PSD collects percentage 29,5%vs 28,7% of the Socialists of Nuno Santos. Shocking performance of the far-right Chega which with a percentage 18,1% is a third party in Portugal. Ventura’s party’s parliamentary representation more than quadrupled to at least 48 MPs in the 230-seat legislature, giving the right wing of parliament a theoretical majority.

Cloudy landscape for government formation
The victory of the center-right Alliance does not automatically lead to a solution, as Luiz Montenegro reiterated that he will not rely on the support of the far-right Chega to form a government and also to conclude any agreements.
For his part, the leader of the Socialist Party, Pedro Nuno Santos, recognized the result and congratulated Montenegro. “Everything shows that the result will not allow the Socialist Party to be the party with the most votes,” Nuno Santos said.
Concern for Chega
The record-breaking far-right party was founded 5 years ago by a former football commentator. In the 2019 election, it received 1.3% of the vote, winning one MP. Three years later, his electoral surge brought him 12 seats with 7.2% of the electorate supporting the far right.
Now, with a percentage of 18%, it emerges as the regulator of the case in Portugal. Ventura has been convicted in the past for making racist comments, and his members and supporters engage in extreme speech on social media.
