Portuguese Carlos do Carmo, one of the most famous fado singers, considered “the voice of Lisbon”, died on Friday January 1, at the age of 81. He immediately received a series of tributes from the music scene and leaders of his country.

“It is with extreme dismay and deep pain that the government learned of the death of Carlos do Carmo and decided to declare a day of national mourning which will be observed next Monday,” said the office of Prime Minister Antonio Costa , in a press release.

“His direct knowledge of popular fado, linked to the sophistication of a music lover who followed world music, as well as his limpid style, allowed him to obtain the recognition of the public and the critics from the first disc, which ‘he recorded in the 1960s,’ reacted the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
