“Ports of Abu Dhabi”: Global challenges that will accelerate the pace of transformation to smart services | Al Khaleej Newspaper

Abu Dhabi: “The Gulf”
The Abu Dhabi Ports Authority released a new research report reviewing its successful experience in digitization, titled “The Importance of Digital to Improve Efficiency: Using Data in Smart Ports ,” which represents a valuable scientific resource through which the organization reviews dynamics. digital transformation in the maritime sector, and its obvious role in promoting and supporting global trade.
Due to the increase in competition in the maritime transport and shipping sectors, the emergence of new trade alliances, and geopolitical conflicts on the international scene that have cast a shadow on supply chains, in addition has grown in economic power in the south. hemisphere, which has caused major changes in maritime trade routes.
The lifeline for many ports in these turbulent times has been to use modern technologies to digitize operations, transforming traditional ports into what are known as “smart ports.”
In its new research report, Abu Dhabi Ports carried out extensive analyzes of the extent to which digital technologies are affecting port operations, which led to the development of a clear strategic approach through which data can be used to increase operational efficiency and enhance sustainability and competitiveness. The research report also mentioned the challenges of digitization and success stories in several global ports, especially in Asia, Africa and South America, which are regions that have seen a qualitative increase in the use of technologies ports.
The report highlighted the effectiveness of using advanced technologies and implementing data-driven strategies in replicating traditional port operations to meet the requirements of our modern and changing world.
Qualitative transformation
Dr Noura Al Dhaheri, Head of Digital and Maqta Gateway, Abu Dhabi Ports Authority, said: “When we use big data and digital twin technologies in ports, we contribute to a qualitative transformation in the field wide range of port operations. These technologies can store large amounts of information derived from port operations, logistics, sensors and GPS networks. And processing this information in real time, which allows ports to create models from different angles and dimensions that help improve supply chains in ports, reduce delays and congestion in facilities, and improving the level of efficiency among various stakeholders.”
Increased productivity
Meanwhile, Captain Ammar Mubarak Al Shaiba, Head of the Maritime and Shipping Department, Abu Dhabi Ports Authority, said: “There is no doubt that digitization contributes to increasing productivity and improving port management and operational processes, which allows us to be more competitive and active. best positioned to meet the port requirements of Our customers and stakeholders, who place great emphasis on transparency, reliability, and increased operational efficiency and productivity. “All this can only be achieved by embracing digitization in our operations and activities.”
It is worth noting that the experts of the Abu Dhabi Ports Group discussed ways to avoid common obstacles that may be faced by those in charge of these technologies, such as the incompatibility of software with each other , cybersecurity risks, and resistance to change and development from those working in the field.
The experts provided an analysis of the new regulations and legislation, including the way to implement the IMO decisions regarding the establishment of Maritime Single Windows (MSWs) which have become mandatory, from the beginning of 2024, and the extent to which this affects port. operations worldwide.
Innovations
The report included key insights that included a detailed analysis of the technical innovations driving the development of traditional ports and their transformation into smart ports, as well as the use of technologies such as Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and blockchain to serve the same purpose.
Ports of Abu Dhabi are highlighted in this research report: To a case study in which it reviewed its efforts in using digital solutions across its business network, in a strategic step which demonstrates the level of tangible benefits in terms of improving efficiency and reducing operating costs.
