“The first thing we see about a person is his appearance, his clothes. I take into account all those elements. Whichever element appeals to me the most, I also stick to it. If there is a lady in a red dress, I definitely feel some flamenco chords in me. If a gentleman is in a suit , I’m more classic. If it’s a teenager, I’m more handy. All those elements are there, because obviously I don’t have a frame for improvisation, but let’s be honest, my frame is 20 years on stage, improvising and creating. Over the years, an awful lot of all kinds of sticks are formed, and the music is already in your fingers. You just have to use your imagination and combine all the elements,” revealed Vanadzins.
Each track is named after a person, so that the listener of the album can better imagine what this person looks like and what he is like.
About the inspiration and creation of the album, Kristaps Vanadziņš said: “It is one live concert recorded at the “Hanza’s platform”. We recorded it, and I thought that maybe something good would happen there. After listening to it, it really seemed that it it is worth publishing that it leads into these portraits. It is very interesting when you listen to that portrait, read the name, and try to guess what that person is like,” said Vanadziņš.

Solo concerts under the name “Portreti” will be shown all over Latvia from September 2 – in Cēsis, Dobele, Liepāja, Saldus, Ventspils, Madona, Saulkrasti and Riga. “This is such a very sensitive project and something new for me. If before I found it challenging to play music in a trio on big stages, now I’m on my own. The tour is so wide because I wanted to cover almost every region where people you can try to feel the truest nature of music, which is a unique phenomenon. Unique in the sense that it is one-of-a-kind, it is very difficult to repeat such a real feeling of music,” said Vanadzins.
In his concerts, the artist will try to show the music as he feels it, and one of the tasks will be to highlight someone from the audience at the concert and, looking at him, create a musical portrait of that person. This means that the artist does not yet know how it will turn out when he steps on the concert stage.
“It’s such a big challenge for me, and I’ve even come to the idea that I try to talk myself out of such completely basic things. If I’ve set out to play one thing, I deliberately do something completely different.
It also means breaking the boundaries in your mind and trying to really get to the essence of music, the way I think it should be and sound,” revealed Vanadzins.
Of course, every concert has a script and stops. The concerts will not be completely improvised from start to finish, they will also include the artist’s own and other compositions previously composed.
“This time I have also included the compositions of other Latvian composers, one very close to me, with whom I have had a good friendship, such as Mārtiņa Braun. We have played together on the same stages, and I have seen from a distance of one and a half meters how he does it Now I will play his music through my perspective, through my arrangements,” the pianist said.
