In the United States, the pioneering role black women play in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) is nothing new. But too often their enormous contribution has been overlooked.

Here are just a few: Dr. Patricia Bath, who invented a laser to treat cataracts; Dr. Dorothy Brown, one of the first black surgeons in the United States; and Dr. Mae Jemison, the first black woman to go to space.
