Portrait: Andrew Cuomo, the fallen hero from New York

New York’s governor enjoyed cult status thanks to his corona management. Andrew Cuomo is now in need of an explanation. Three women make serious allegations.

When supposed heroes fall, the impact is often particularly painful. For the person concerned, but also for those who have placed their hopes in him. In this respect, the case of the New York governor is downright classic. In the corona pandemic, Andrew Cuomo rose to be a celebrated star – he became the counterpart of the corona denier and US President Donald Trump. His press conferences achieved cult status – even with the Emmy, the television award of the USA, the 63-year-old received an award. In times when the Democrats moved into the White House with a 78-year-old Biden, Cuomo was considered a political promise for the future. He was traded as a presidential candidate.

Now the deep fall. Cuomo has to become a crisis manager on his own behalf. Three women accuse him of sexual harassment: 36-year-old Lindsay Boylan, a former consultant, says Cuomo kissed her on the mouth in his office in 2018 without being asked. A former health advisor accuses him of verbally harassing her. A third woman accuses Cuomo of touching her inappropriately and asking if he could kiss her.

The Minister of Justice initiates an investigation against Cuomo

In his party, the Democrats, no one even tries to gloss over the matter. The allegations are serious, the New York Attorney General Letitia James wants to investigate. Cuomo himself says, “I admit that some of the things I have said have been misinterpreted as undesirable flirtation. As far as anyone felt that way, I am sincerely sorry. ”But he also emphasizes that he“ never touched anyone inappropriately ”and never made any immoral advances to anyone. The allegations are by no means the only problem: The governor is said to have embellished corona numbers and thereby endangered human lives. The end of his political career seems as good as sealed.

Andrew Cuomo’s father was governor

The divorced father of three grown daughters would be left with the ruins of his life plans if he were to leave office. Because his goal has always been to at least imitate his own father. Mario Cuomo was governor of New York from 1983 to 1994, and from a young age Andrew – his grandparents are Italian immigrants – was involved as his campaign manager. He campaigned for the homeless, came up with ideas for an innovative housing policy, and won prizes for his management reforms. Yet his career has not always been straightforward. As early as 2002, the lawyer was considered a promising candidate for the post of governor, a kind of prime minister – and had to withdraw his application because of arrogant statements. The move was not made until 2010. The end of the career ladder should have been reached.
