The US teams Portland Timbers and Atlanta United took advantage of their visits to the Marathon of Honduras and Alajuelense of Costa Rica, on Tuesday in the first leg of the round of 16 of the 2021 Concacaf Champions League.
In the first game of the day, the Portland Timbers drew a 2-2 draw against Marathon at the San Pedro Sula Metropolitan Olympic Stadium.
The Timbers had the lead on the scoreboard twice. Chilean Felipe Mora made it 1-0 with a left-footed shot inside the catracha area at minute 35.
At 39, Brayan Castillo made it 1-1 for the Honduran team with a point-blank shot inside the small area.
The North American squad went ahead 2-1 to 59 with a free kick taken by Diego Valeri more than 30 meters from the goal. The Argentine placed the ball in the upper left corner.
The 2-2 for the ‘Green Monster’ was signed by Marlon Ramírez at 68 with a left-footed shot inside the area.
“Having scored two away goals was very important to be able to face the second game of the tie,” said Giovanni Savarese, coach of the Timbers.
Later at the Alejandro Morera Soto stadium in Alajuela, Atlanta United beat Alajuelense 1-0 on the road.
The only goal of the match was the work of Argentine Ezequiel Barco with a penalty charged towards the lower right corner at minute 50.
“We lost the game, but we had a good performance and we created a lot of goal options that we could not achieve. We are going to do our best to be able to reverse the score,” said Andrés Carevic, Alajuelense technical director.
Tuesday’s matchday ended at the Félix Sánchez Olympic Stadium in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where Cruz Azul of Mexico did not go 0-0 against Arcahaie of Haiti.
