Port of Beirut remains operational after explosions, director says

The Beirut Port Manager announced that the Lebanese port was still operational after the blasts, with 8,703 containers being unloaded between August 11 and 18, local channel LBCI reported.

“The port is ready to receive ships and ensure import-export activities as it will remain the main economic center of Lebanon,” Bassem al-Kaissi said at a press conference on the latest developments in the port.

According to the Chinese news agency Xinhua, the Lebanese army has cleared docks 11, 12 and 13 as well as yard 3 in order to allow the port to be fully operational, al-Kaissi said.

Two huge explosions ravaged the port of Beirut on August 4, shaking all buildings in the Lebanese capital and leaving at least 177 dead and 6,000 injured.
