A total of 232,000 travelers were processed during the summer of 2024 at the port of Algiers, against 196 ships, a report from the Algiers-port Regional Customs Directorate indicated on Sunday.
Presenting the results at a press conference, the head of divisional inspection for special regimes at management level, the controller general, Abdelkader Chibane, affirmed that 196 passenger transport vessels had been treated (98 at the arrival and 98 on return), against a total of 232,868 travelers (between departure and arrival).
As for tourist vehicles, 85,235 vehicles were processed by Customs services at the port of Algiers during the summer of 2024 (50,901 vehicles on arrival and 34,334 vehicles on departure).
Concerning automobile transit titles, the official reported 42,606 titles (23,552 titles on board ships, 19,054 titles at port level), adding that with the aim of “facilitating customs measures, in particular transit documents”, a new experience will be launched for the preparation of customs documents via the “Alces” digital customs platform.
He further estimated that this step would allow travelers to complete their customs formalities quickly, and would optimize processing.
In addition to strengthening human resources during the same period, at the level of all customs structures, reception and orientation units were also activated with a view to ensuring support optimal and rapid load of travelers, according to Mr. Chibane who affirmed that the Port of Algiers occupies 1st place nationally in terms of passenger movement.
The same official also indicated that during the first nine months of 2024, approximately 13,621 imported vehicles less than 3 years old were cleared with a value of customs taxes exceeding 6.4 billion DA, compared to 5,122 vehicles during the period. last year (i.e. + 166%).
More than 1,100 seizure operations at the Port of Algiers
Furthermore, the services of the Algiers-Port Regional Directorate carried out, between January 1 and September 30, 1,124 seizure operations of goods with a total value of more than 80 million DA, while the value of the fines resulting from these economic crimes is 183 million DA.
The same services presented, on the sidelines of this conference, some quality operations carried out, including the seizure of 1001 counterfeit 1000 DA notes, 9,120 psychotropic tablets, and 32g of drugs worth 31 million DA.
As part of the fight against cigarette smuggling, Customs services seized 2,171 cartons of cigarettes worth 8 million in 102 operations, in addition to the seizure of quantities of new and used spare parts whose amount amounts to 256 million Da.
Significant quantities of food products worth 44 million DA were also seized, as well as cosmetic products worth 108 million DA and mobile phones estimated at 4 million DA.
According to the explanations provided, this assessment was carried out thanks to the customs administration’s commitment to effectively carrying out its control missions with the aim of facilitating the processing of travelers.
