Port authority bus station to be upgraded

New York City Planning Commission approves Port Authority bus terminal renovation plan.

With this decision, the long-in-the-works plan to renovate the 74-year-old building has been launched.

The City Planning Commission voted unanimously yesterday to approve the $10 billion renovation. It will be funded in part by city tax revenue, port authority capital funds, federal loans and other sources.

The aim is to make it more active for the 65 million passengers who pass through each year.

This upgrade is expected to be done in three phases.

The first will start early next year. It will include the construction of a five-story bus terminal and parking lot from Ninth Avenue to Tenth Avenue.

Phase 2 would involve the demolition and construction of the new main building of over two million square feet.

And phase 3 will include the construction of two new commercial buildings, wider sidewalks and new green spaces.

However, while this is a step forward in innovation, users won’t see any improvements for at least a decade.

The plan will now be presented to the city council.

They have 50 days to organize a hearing and vote on this project.
