Porsche does not want to give up atmospheric engines, they have a plan in Stuttgart

Frank-Steffen Walliser, the product manager for the 718 and 911 series, told British Autocar that Porsche is “very committed” to keeping the outboard engines in its future offering.

“The low-speed torque electric motor and the high-speed atmospheric internal combustion engine go together perfectly,” Walliser said, adding that this could help the engines survive without supercharging.

Atmospheric units are disappearing not only from sports cars, but also from small, cheap cars. The reason is the pressure on emission values, which turbocharged engines meet more easily, while maintaining or increasing power and torque.

Porsche seems to be one of the last islands of hope for engines that are more readable for drivers thanks to a gradual increase in power. They work better with dynamic driving, and the gradual increase in power with the peak at the red limit is more attractive to enthusiastic drivers than the flat torque curve of turbo engines. In addition, such motors are easier to maintain.

The brand from Stuttgart, Germany, has now also launched turbocharged engines across the range, but also offers non-supercharged specialties such as the 911 GT3 or 718 GT4 and Spyder.
