Porsche believes in synthetic gasoline, invests another billion

Holding HIF Global LLC is also working at a pilot plant for the production of synthetic fuels in Chile, in which Porsche is involved with Siemens Energy and ExxonMobil, the oil giant. Porsche’s recent investment will go to other similar production plants in areas where there is enough renewable energy to operate them, such as the USA, Australia or Chile.

“E-fuels are a significant contribution to climate protection and a meaningful complement to our electromobility. With the investment, Porsche is expanding its commitment to sustainable mobility, ”said Barbara Frenkel, Member of the Board of Management of Porsche AG.

E-fuels, also called synthetic fuels, are a carbon neutral substitute for today’s petroleum fuels. The factory uses their “green” energy to produce hydrogen and oxygen by electrolyzing water. It then combines hydrogen with carbon dioxide obtained from the air into synthetic methanol, which then converts it into e-fuel, which can be burned in a conventional car engine.

Including this incineration, the whole process should be carbon neutral. However, e-fuels are not yet available in sufficient quantities to be driven globally; Porsche expects production to start sometime in the middle of this year and wants to test e-fuels first during racing.
