Porsche 911 Hybrid System to be Unveiled this Summer: What to Expect

German sports car manufacturer Porsche’s legendary 911 model will receive a hybrid system and this car will be presented already this summer, company representatives have confirmed, indicating that these changes are part of a wider face liftwhich has been developed for a couple of years now.

The biggest change in this modernization is, of course, the specially developed hybrid system – it combines a six-cylinder internal combustion engine with an electric motor placed on the front axle. This electric motor is specially designed for the needs of the 911. Of course, it will be an all-wheel drive variant – the internal combustion engine will turn the rear wheels, and the electric motor will drive the front.

Porsche representatives explain that the system produces its own electricity, that is, the internal combustion engine serves as a generator, but additional energy can be stored with brake energy recovery. This makes it clear that Porsche has not created a plug-in hybrid, and this car will probably not be able to be charged from an external energy source.

Electricity is stored in a specially designed lithium-ion battery, with engineers trying to make it as light as possible, but its capacity is not comparable to that of other automakers’ plug-in hybrid supercars. How much power this system can develop is shrouded in mystery for now. It is known that the technologies required for the needs of the 911 were developed by the engineers of Porsche’s street car and motorsport departments, exchanging information, as well as involving Rimac specialists.

There are currently no plans for an electric 911. Perhaps there is one in the plans, but Porsche representatives have said that it will not happen in the foreseeable future. For now, the development path of the 911 will lead down the path of hybrid systems, as Porsche continues its efforts to develop synthetic fuels.
