Porsche has repeatedly stated that the flagship 911 model will be the last to undergo electrification. Apparently the time has come. A complete transition to electric mobility is not discussed (and even in the long term), but the Porsche 911 hybrid will be presented on May 28. This is the first road-going version of the 911 with electric power, as so far only racing versions have been hybrids (although there have been attempts to electrify took and tuning companies), so it’s time to talk about a new milestone in the more than 60-year history of the legendary rear-engined model.
Development and road testing of the hybrid has already been completed; in total, the prototypes have completed more than five million test kilometers, but there are no technical details about the car yet. It is only clear that we are not talking about a completely new technical filling, but about adding an electric component to the current Porsche 911 of the 992 generation. that is, the traction battery will be compact and relatively light .
The developers themselves call the power plant the term Performance Hybrid, that is, it is designed not only for fuel economy, but also for exceptional power characteristics. And to prove this, the company announced the lap time at the Nurburgring: back last September, the hybrid prototype completed the Nordschleife in 7 minutes and 16.934 seconds. The company did not specify the length of the lap (there are options for 20.6 or 20.8 km), but they said that it is 8.7 seconds faster than the comparable version of the outgoing model.
These results were achieved on standard road tyres, but with an optional aerodynamic body kit, which includes active front fender lines and a large rear wing. Aerodynamics brought down more force, but still, according to German engineers, the main role was played by the new gas-electric power plant, giving significantly more power and lightning fast response from the power unit to the accelerator pedal.
All technical details will be released in two weeks. The hybrid will be part of the updated family under the code 992.2; the exterior and interior of the sports car will be slightly redesigned. According to the launch information, the original versions of Carrera and Carrera S will remain in the range, but will receive a 48-volt starter generator from Valeo.
