A total of 56,033 pilgrims have passed through Porriño so far this year, 7% more than in the whole of 2003, according to data provided yesterday by the A Louriña council, which claims that this data consolidates “Villa del Louro as a fundamental stop on the Camino de Santiago”.
As recorded in the register of the Pilgrim’s Office of Santiago de Compostela, 34% of them are Spanish and 66%, nearly 36,000 people, come from other countries. Those that contribute the most pilgrims are Portugal (14.34%), the United States (7.3%), Germany (6.83%), Italy (4.44%), Brazil (2.99%), the United Kingdom (2.80%) and Holland (2%).
The council highlights that “the increase in the flow of pilgrims compared to the previous year is not only indicative of the growing popularity of the route, but also had a very positive impact on the local economy.”
100% hotel occupancy
The council says that there has been a significant increase in hotel occupancy, with many accommodations recording occupancy rates of almost 100% in the high season. The restaurant sector benefited, increasing its turnoverthanks to the daily influx of pilgrims looking to sample the local cuisine after their day’s journey.
“But beyond the economic impact, the presence of pilgrims strengthened the spirit of hospitality and community in Porriño,” explains the Councilor for Tourism, Vanessa Ucha. “The neighborhood was dedicated to welcoming travelers, which enriched the experience of the Camino, promoting a cultural exchange that enriches us all.” The mayor, Alejandro Lorenzo, expressed the same sentiment. He highlighted “the importance of the impact of the Portuguese Way in the municipality as a tourist, economic and cultural driving force”“That is why we will continue to support initiatives to make their stay in our town as pleasant as possible and activities, such as Pilgrim’s Day, aimed especially at them so that their stay in Porriño is the first of many.”
