Poroshenko, who held the position of president from 2014 to 2019, had planned a series of meetings with high-ranking officials abroad, but he had to cancel the visit because the ex-president was stopped at the border.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) stated in a statement released on Saturday that the former president was prevented from crossing the border because he planned to meet with Orbán, who is known for his pro-Russian stance.
The SBU has expressed suspicion that Moscow planned to use this meeting in its disinformation and psychological operations against Ukraine.
Poroshenko has been barred from leaving the country before, for example last May, when he was preparing to go to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Lithuania.
Poroshenko has been under investigation since leaving office on charges of treason and corruption, which he claims were fabricated by his successor as head of state, Volodymyr Zelensky.
