“Population respected the measures in an exemplary way”

The Mayor of Melgaço announced today the lifting of the sanitary siege in Parada do Monte, a measure implemented on March 25 to stop the spread of covid-19 that reached a total of nine people in that village.

“The sanitary siege was lifted this morning. We achieved all the goals we wanted with this measure. The population exemplarily respected the measures that were implemented and the recommendations that were given. We think the parish is doing well and we can carry out the survey ”, said Manoel Batista.

Speaking to the Lusa agency, the socialist mayor said that “the development of the covid-19 in Parada do Monte is positive”, and that “four of the five people who were hospitalized have already returned home”.

“Two more cases were confirmed last week, but they are two related cases and confined to the families of the people who were hospitalized,” he specified.

The sanitary siege in the village of Parada do Monte, with 370 inhabitants, was in force for 20 days, after confirmation of the third case of infection with the new coronavirus.

According to figures today revealed by Manoel Batista, in the municipality of Melgaço, district of Viana do Castelo, there are 57 confirmed cases of infection, 41 of which are users and employees of Lar Pereira de Sousa, belonging to Santa Casa da Misericórdia, where they have already registered four deaths.

The lack of employees in that home, with 55 users, led the Câmara de Melgaço to announce, through its official page on the social network Facebook, the hiring of doctors and nurses.

“It will not be easy because, at the moment, human resources linked to health are exhausted and more or less allocated to other responses, but we are hopeful that we will succeed”, he said.

Asked about the meeting today of the Intermunicipal Community (CIM) of Alto Minho to analyze the situation of homes in the district of Viana do Castelo, Manoel Batista said it was “important to find the most appropriate ways to solve a complicated problem”.

“The situation of homes is more complicated in Minho and in the North and it will certainly be the situation that will bring us more problems and more difficulties in the near future. It doesn’t seem like a situation for a week. It is already a very complicated situation, at this moment, in homes in Viana do Castelo, Melgaço, Monção and Arcos de Valdevez, but I believe that these and other municipalities will have other problems related to homes. It is necessary to implement a proactive attitude towards these institutions, monitoring them more closely to help them deal with this situation ”, he said.

The CIM meeting will be attended by local health, social security and civil protection authorities.

The new coronavirus, responsible for the covid-19 pandemic, was detected in China in December 2019 and has already infected almost 1.9 million people worldwide, of whom more than 117,000 died. Still in this universe of patients, about 402,000 are reported to have recovered.

In Portugal, where the first confirmed cases were registered on March 2, the last balance of the Directorate-General for Health indicated 535 deaths among 16,934 confirmed infections. Of this universe of patients, 1,187 are admitted to hospitals, 277 recovered and the rest recover at home or in other institutions.
