Population of Baden-Württemberg: Aging Trends and Regional Differences

According to the State Statistical Office, the population of Baden-Württemberg was on average 43.8 years old at the end of 2022 and thus around 9 years older than in 1970. The average age of the female population was 45.0 years at least 2, 5 years higher than that of male residents. The reason for this is the higher life expectancy of women, according to the State Statistical Office.

There are clear differences within the state: Of the 44 urban and rural districts, Heidelberg has the youngest population at an average age of 40.7 years, while Baden-Baden is by far the oldest at 47.0 years (chart).

If the 1,101 municipalities in the state are considered, the differences are even greater: the youngest population in the state currently lives in Riedhausen in the Ravensburg district (38.0 years), followed by Bubsheim in the Tuttlingen district (38.6 years) and Breitingen im Alb -Danube district (39.2 years). In 4 other municipalities, the average age is also under 40 years; this also includes the university town of Tübingen, where the average age of the inhabitants is just 39.7 years.

On the other hand, the high average age of the population in the city of Baden-Baden is still exceeded by 44 municipalities. It is highest in the resort of Ibach, the smallest community in the Waldshut district, at 53.4 years, followed by the exclave of Büsingen am Hochrhein (Constance district) at 51.3 years and Moosburg (Biberach district) at 51.1 years.

There are many reasons for the regionally very different average age of the population. In addition to special influences such as a high proportion of students, the location of a monastery or the character of a municipality through a health resort, the age structure of the population is determined not least by the level of the birth rate and the proportion of foreigners in the population.1

Ultimately, however, it is also very important for the development of this indicator whether young or older people have moved in or out in the past. In this regard, the trend observed since the turn of the millennium, in which young adults in particular have increasingly moved to the country’s major and university cities, has meant that the average age of the population there has increased more slowly than in most smaller communities. In recent years, however, this »trend towards the city« has weakened significantly.
