Population growth halved by 2020 due to travel restrictions and higher mortality rate | NOW

In 2020 the Dutch population grew by 63,000 inhabitants, half less than in 2019, reports the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) Tuesday. At the end of 2020, the Netherlands had about 17.5 million inhabitants.

According to Statistics Netherlands, the first wave of the corona pandemic in the spring in particular had a major effect on population growth. More people died than children were born and the growth due to migration from abroad came to a complete standstill.

During the second wave in the fall, mortality rates increased again, but migration declined less compared to the first wave. The population grew in 2020 mainly due to migration. Over the year, 59,000 more people came to the Netherlands than people moved abroad.

In 2020, 4,000 more children were born than people died. During both the first and second waves, the death rate exceeded the number of children born.

Statistics Netherlands had expected in advance that the population would exceed 17.5 million. But that did not happen. The number of inhabitants remained just below this limit. These are provisional figures that can change slightly if more data is received by Statistics Netherlands.
