In six months, the Dutch population has grown by almost 120,000 people. The Central Bureau of Statistics, which the figures has publishedspeaks of “strong growth for the first half of the year”.

This growth is due to immigration. In the past six months, more than 195,000 foreign immigrants came to the Netherlands, about 100,000 more than in the same period last year.

Because 72,000 people emigrated at the same time, the total population growth due to foreign migration came to almost 123,000 people. That is four times as much as in the first half of last year. Furthermore, because some 3,000 more people died than babies were born, the population growth eventually came to just under 120,000 people.

Most immigrants came from countries outside the European Union, especially from Ukraine. A part of the latter group has since left the Netherlands. As a result, according to Statistics Netherlands, emigration is also higher than in the first half of last year.

At the beginning of this month, the Netherlands had a total of more than 17.7 million inhabitants. Compared to the first half of last year, 5400 fewer children were born in the past six months. The number of deaths was similar to last year.
